Counselling

Meaningful change encompasses courage, commitment, and a willingness to explore the patterns, beliefs, and experiences that may be holding you back. As we work together to allow for deeper exploration of self, I will support you in the process of moving forward with greater clarity, confidence and self-acceptance.

Hi I'm Karen

About me

Bachelor of counselling

I have a bachelor’s degree in counselling and I am a member of the Australian Counselling Association. I have extensive experience in both the private and public mental health sector. I have extensive experience in both the private and public mental health sector and have had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of individuals, including NDIS participants.

Throughout my career, I have helped people living with a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, mood disorders, addiction, and trauma. I have also been practicing yoga and meditation for over thirty years, and am able to incorporate breathwork and meditation instruction into our sessions.

Therapy

Working from a holistic approach, I draw primarily on a warm collaborative and Person-Centred approach to address client concerns. I work collaboratively with each individual to explore the underlying factors contributing to unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns, while tailoring therapeutic strategies to their unique needs, goals and aspirations.

I currently offer 1:1 counselling for ages over 18 years. The first session will mostly consist of an initial assessment; a strong counsellor/client rapport is a reliable indicator of positive clinical outcomes, and it is important you feel I am the right fit for you.

My story

I bring a wealth of life experience to my counselling practice and believe that personal growth can deepen our capacity to understand and connect with others. My own life journey has given me insight into many of the challenges people face.

Having been married for 27 years and making the tough decision to leave, I understand the difficulties of relationships. The emotional, practical, and financial factors that can make leaving an unhappy relationship feel overwhelming. This experience has given me a genuine appreciation of the courage it takes to navigate significant life changes and rebuild a sense of self.

As a parent of two neurodivergent adult children, I have first-hand experience of the joys and challenges that can come with providing ongoing support to loved ones. This has deepened my understanding of the emotional impact that caregiving, family dynamics, and life’s uncertainties can have on our mental and physical wellbeing.

Throughout my career, I have worked in a variety of roles, including supporting people experiencing a range of mental health challenges in a non-judgemental and compassionate space. The complexities of mental health have provided me a greater insight into the many challenges they suffer on a daily basis.

I am passionate about my wellbeing and have preserved a yoga practice that has evolved over the last 30 years. My yoga perspective informs my approach, with mindfulness offering a gentle way of becoming more of accepting of thoughts, emotions and physical sensations. Mindfulness can help you feel more grounded, supported, and connected to yourself.
